The Project

Middleton Plus Development Trust, with generous funding from Northern Heartlands, has produced five guides describing walks in Upper Teesdale. The project is called “A Walk Through Time”. The guides are available via this dedicated website walkmiddleton.info, on mobile devices as well as in printed form. This website describes the walking guides.

The walks and the website encourage visitors and local residents to enjoy and understand the heritage, environment and culture of beautiful Upper Teesdale. The project shared its initial research as part of Heritage Open Day and the Teesdale Heritage Group’s exhibition remembering the opening of the Teesdale Railway line 150 years ago.

For Heritage Open Day 2018 we created a Village Trail which looks at the way the buildings and shops in Middleton-in-Teesdale have changed since the coming of the railway and in recent times. We are grateful to the Heritage Group for the use of their photographic collection.

The walks described in the guides also cover Leekworth, Holwick, the Beck Road and the Tees Railway Path, appealing to visitors and local residents alike. The website includes easy to download descriptions and maps of the walks. Printed versions are available from the Tourist Information Centre in Middleton-in-Teesdale and other outlets in the Dale. Detailed “Yellow Maps” based on the ordnance survey also cover the walk areas. These are available to buy at the TIC, Bowlees Visitor Centre and the Village Bookshop.

During the project’s development we have maintained a blog on our website and Facebook as well as regular updates about the information being used to produce the guides. The guide website is walkmiddleton.info. Information is shared on the TIC’s Facebook page (@MiddletonTIC) and our Twitter feed (@TicMiddleton). The TIC website is visitmiddleton.co.uk.
